4-5 in 100 people develop gestational diabetes dur 4-5 in 100 people develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy, usually in the 2nd or 3rd trimester (although it can be earlier).

Gestational diabetes occurs when we have too much sugar (glucose) in our bloodstream.

It's often believed that you must be overweight or have an unhealthy lifestyle. But this isn't necessarily true! Pregnancy hormones can inhibit insulin's effectiveness (the hormone released to process glucose), resulting in high blood sugar levels - regardless of lifestyle! Whilst some women have risk factors that make it more likely; it's important to be aware that anyone can develop it.
